5 Minutes with Bag Designer Liucia
September 1, 2014Filed Under: Travel & Lifestyle
We spoke to the creative mind behind Japanese bag label Liucia to learn about the stunning materials used to create their one-of-a-kind clutches. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why did you choose to use kimonos and obi to make bags?
In Japan, kimono and obi are valued but little used artisanal materials because of its cost and intricacy. Admiring [obi], I thought how wonderful it could be if brought into the present in terms of design. The best way to do so would be to emphasize the beauty of the original artisanal work by keeping the shape and form of the bag very minimalistic and modern. The very first obi wristlet design was born this way.
How would you describe your bags?
Our style is really about finding the whimsical and youthful side of each individual but tied together with a lady like ribbon.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. In particular, traveling and loved ones often provide a vast and lush canvas that is endlessly inspiring. Sometimes, you meet someone special and their beautiful personality needs to be translated somehow to a form or shape and perhaps, their name can be the beginning of that inspiration.
