When in Hong Kong: Wish Upon a Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree
Hong Kong Travel & Lifestyle: Wishing Trees Partake in this Chinese tradition with your family and significant other. The Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree, located in Fong Ma Po, is covered in a vibrant red color all year long. Locals and tourists gather here to write their wishes on red joss paper. The “josses” are bundled and tied onto oranges with red string, before being thrown onto the Wishing Tree. It is believed that the higher the branch your joss paper gets caught on, the more likely your wish comes true. Get there by taxi, train or bus. lamtsuen.com LAM TSUEN VALLEY Did you know? A period of conservation is imposed to help the Wishing Trees recover and flourish. Strikingly bright colors, especially red, are symbolic of good luck. In 2005, a branch accidentally broke and fell onto passersby. As a result, visitors are encouraged to leave their joss papers neatly on wooden racks near the Wishing Tree.

Way back when, wishes were written on a piece of paper, tied to an orange, and flung up into the tree. If caught on a branch, your wish would come true. Recent incidents have made authorities wary of this practice due to bystander injuries, but these days you can still tie your wishes on a wooden rack for the Tree spirits to evaluate.
