After the long day Jackie and I had yesterday, we were determined to be as kind to our feet, and as efficient as possible on our second day of shooting. We met at IFC late in the afternoon and grabbed a quick bite to eat before taking the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui. We were blessed with great weather- clear haze-free skies, freakishly low humidity and BREEZE, making our short ride to the dark side rather pleasant.

12 Hour Faux Tourist

Wouldn’t want my milk tea any other way.

Went around Hong Kong island with Jackie (our freelance photographer) to take photos for our new website today. In the span of 12 hours, we visited Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Tai Hang, Tin Hau, Sheung Wan, Central, The Peak, and went to pitch night at Cocoon (the co-working space ZAOZAO first started out at). All that walking in the blistering heat meant we had to make multiple stops to refuel and take advantage of A/C and free wifi wherever possible. Despite how tired, sweaty, thirsty and hot we were, not once did Jackie make a big fuss, which made working together so much more fun!

Mugginess

Muggy Hong Kong.

Death by pollution. It’s going to happen.

It was business as usual today. I went to Hollywood Road and Ladder Street in search of inspiration and managed to hunt down a traditional calligrapher despite his store being shut.

We’ve been looking at different sources of inspiration to help with our rebranding process. We want our new logo to represent the new identity we have created around the aspirational “ZAO” woman, one that is embodied ostensibly by both Vicky and I, but presented in a contemporary and sophisticated way that appeals to our Western audience. Think Eastern sensibility, subtly hinting towards culture and tradition, but very much acknowledging the ball-busting nature of an Asian woman. We wanted to avoid using colors, symbols and themes that were overtly cliche. The last thing we want is for our website to be red with lanterns, dragons and yin yang signs.

Studio XYZ

Studio XYZ: Hong Kong’s answer to Soul Cycle. #cardioparty! The only kind of party I care about nowadays.

The weather has been so horrible these past few days. Hong Kong is going to be hit with the worst storm in 34 years tonight. I’m a little worried! Last time signal 10 was hoisted, the howling wind and violent swaying of the trees outside my window kept me up all night long. I kept thinking my windows were going to shatter and one of the trees would fall on my face…

Mid-Autumn Madness

Mong Kong Street Signage

Street signage in Mong Kong.

I was surprised I was able to schedule a full day of meetings today as it’s a public holiday. It’s a three day weekend and most people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with their families. This festival is considered to be one of the most important holiday traditions and celebrates three fundamental concepts: family gatherings, thanksgiving and prayers. No wonder my mom wasn’t thrilled when I forgot and didn’t want to go out to dinner with her… Oops.
