Seoul Searching

Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea.

Wandering around Hongdae before my meetings.

Made an impromptu trip to Seoul after returning to Singapore for less than 48 hours. In the 3 days that I was there, I managed to set up a few designer meetings, visited different areas (hongdae, myungdong, namdaemun, dongdaemun, garosugil, apgujeong, gangnam, itaewon), shopped and caught up with a college buddy of mine. It was my first time in South Korea and I was taken aback by how rude and unfriendly people were (for comparison’s sake, Parisians are way nicer)! Whether I was asking the concierge for recommendations, asking passerby’s for directions, taking a taxi or just going about my day, I kept encountering unpleasant people. My Korean friend told me on my last night that locals are pretty hostile to outsiders. Such a shame. I wonder how different my experience would have been if I spoke Korean.

A Trip of Firsts

Plethora of Taipei guidebooks.

Plethora of Taipei guidebooks and maps I grabbed at various locations. Ended up not using any.

Mymore Bakery in Taipei, Taiwan.

Stumbled upon MyMore, a gem of a bakery. They had a great selection of delicious artisan breads like Japanese Red Wine, Cultivation Wolfberry, Frozen Chocolate and many many more. #carbocide

Taiwanese street vendor selling handmade and hand-painted ocarinas in all shapes and sizes in jiufen.

Took a day trip to jiufen (approximately an hour outside of Taipei) with our photographer and his friend. It used to be a mining town in the 50s and is now a popular tourist destination. This street vendor was selling handmade and hand-painted ocarinas in all shapes and sizes.

Mom and pop joint selling Taiwanese dessert (shaved peanut + ice-cream wrapped up).

Mom and pop joint selling Taiwanese dessert (shaved peanut + ice-cream wrap). Singapore sells a similar ice-cream waffle/sandwich so the thought of mixing dessert with bread wasn’t foreign.

Taiwanese tea eggs (cooked in jasmine tea and soy sauce).

Sporting my photographer’s jacket and picking Taiwanese tea eggs. The hard-boiled eggs were cooked in jasmine tea and soy sauce. Don’t judge, just try it if you get the chance!

Shilin Night Market, Taipei, Taiwan,

Went the famous Shilin Night Market despite wanting to pass out after a full day of walking. Was definitely worth it. Spent about 3 hours shopping and eating.

Coconut milk at Shilin Night Market.

My Mandarin isn’t very good so I’ve been randomly choosing my snacks and meals (which is adventurous for me because I am a super picky eater). This coconut milk was sooo fresh and smooth. #nomnomnom

Juicy pork and vegetable bun at Shilin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan.

Had no idea what I ordered when I paid for this. Luckily it wasn’t anything weird (spicy meat and vegetables). Took me an hour to eat it because it was so filling #startuplife #dontwastefood

Pig's Blood Cake in Shilin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan.

This literally means “Pig’s Blood Cake”. You’re suppose to eat it with soy sauce and peanuts. This was the one thing I couldn’t bring myself to try… especially after our photographer joked that it was pig’s period. GROSS.

GMO avocados at Shilin Night Market, Taipei, Taiwan.

GMO avocados? I’d buy them in bulk if I didn’t already have 30kg worth of stuff to bring home.

My 8 day trip to Taipei was a wonderful jam-packed experience. It was the first time I travelled alone on a business trip, the first time I went to a new city without knowing anyone, the first time I forgoed making crazy detailed plans and the first time I encouraged myself to be spontaneous (said yes to everything and anything, that was legal of course). The temporary carefree attitude was super liberating. It was fun letting life unfold in unexpected ways, instead of trying to control different variables and hoping everything will pan out perfectly. Couldn’t have asked for a better time!

Booze, Schmooze

Wearing Topshop & Shourouk to Taipei IN Style.

Day 2: Wearing Topshop & Shourouk to my last day at Taipei IN Style.

Had a great day today despite being brain dead and talked out after back to back meetings from 10am - 5pm. Hung around W Lounge before heading to ximending with a few designers for an early hotpot dinner. We meandered around the district, taking in the sights, checking out trinkets and tasting the local food before cabbing to zhongsan in search for more booze (obviously).

One Down, One to Go

Taipei IN Style at Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall today in a Maje dress and Valentino studded flats.

Between booth visits and fashion shows today in a blue Maje dress and Valentino studded flats.

First day of Taipei IN Style wasn’t what I unexpected. I visited several booths and attended fashion shows before parking myself in front of my iPad, furiously googling places to look for emerging designers around Taipei. The thing with these trade shows is that majority of the designers who present their collections are apparel designers, and a huge section of the show is dedicated to suppliers and manufacturers, meaning the number of designers who are actually compatible with ZAOZAO are very few. I’m not sure why there are so many more clothing designers than they are accessories (not saying it’s a bad thing). Guess we need to keep looking for better trade shows. It’s so hit and miss.

Hello Taipei

Heading to Taipei from Singapore Changi Airport.

Taipei bound.

Met our Taiwanese photographer yesterday right after I checked into my hotel. Gave him a preview of our site, told him what kind of photos we need and went over our three day itinerary together. We ended up revising most of the itinerary, adding attractions that are not the most popular tourist attractions, but would photograph a lot better.

So Haute

Hugging a giant MCM bunny after all the fashion shows ended.

Joined a friend at FIDé Fashion Week last night at Marina Bay Sands. The focus was on Japanese haute couture. Designers Junko Koshino, Yoshiki Hishinuma and Keita Maruyama were flown in to show their collections. I wasn’t able to get any good shots of the clothing (unfortunately) but the workmanship was amazing. There was so much attention to detail. You could tell how much time, energy and love was put into creating each outfit. There were so many pieces I fell in love with!
