Our Designers: Kae Hana

KAE HANA

"I got over being afraid, fast."

We have to admit, we were attracted to KAE HANA's colorful digital collages like moths to a flame. Designed "for a sensible woman with a rebellious side", Kae's designs cleverly balances abstract prints with flattering silhouettes. Unlike your typical floral prints, Kae used pixels to create the illusion of flowers on her clothing.

Kae is currently collaborating with Lully Crooelly for her upcoming Autumn/Winter collection named "Mono Loco". Unfortunately, we won't be able to attend her preview party this weekend but we are certain it will be amazing to say the least!

Read on to find out more about the gregarious Kae Hana!

Hi Kae, tell us a little about yourself.

Oh hello! Im Kae Hana in short, I'm a world conqueror, butt kicker and a full time dreamer. I spend my days thinking about nothing else but fashion and prints while trying my hardest to appear normal, I've clobbered many people in my head at least thrice. On a more serious note, I am the founder and designer of the Singapore label Kae Hana (surprise! surprise!). Kae Hana focuses on in-house designed prints and collaborations with other local visual artists. We are young, fun, not to mention funny and loud! Oh, and I have a pet unicorn.
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?

When I was old enough to run around with a pair of scissors and cutting up my mum's fabrics (I was prolly 7). I was already sewing patches on bags and making friendship bands then, it's like a natural progression.
Was it an easy decision to launch your own brand?

Launching anything is never easy. But heck, if I'm gonna pour out my soul onto anything worthy, it might as well be my own label. I got over being afraid, fast.
What was the most unexpected challenge you have encountered so far?

It has got to be the customers. When I started this, my target market was a lot younger than
the women who are buying my designs currently. Thus, this has made me more aware of my target market and therefore I've made some changes specially catering to their needs.
How would you describe your designs?

My designs are easy to wear, easy to run and of course, dance! My clothes are clean, young and trendy, yet timeless at the same time. My designs flatter the woman's body. The mix-and-match pieces not only work well with each other, it also blends in well with your existing wardrobe.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

Real women, women who have to go to the office, women who go for dinners with her girls, women who work hard yet still know how to pamper herself. Apart from the people I meet on a daily basis, traveling, books & the music I listen to greatly inspire me.

Who is the Kae Hana customer?

A Kae Hana customer is someone who isn't afraid of color. Someone who appreciates prints and its power to change the whole outfit. She is smart, a quiet rebel, witty, funny, a backpacker one day and a fine dining connoisseur the next.

How would you describe you brand in 3 words?

Colorful, print-oriented, conversational.

Kae's digital collage she created for her current collection.
Kae spent many sleepless nights measuring and revising the dimensions of the prints, scaling hem according to the clothing sizes.
Bringing an idea to life isn't always easy as sketches may look fantastic but turn out completely different after production.
Kae strategically places her prints on her garments to make sure the prints flatter a woman's body.

Customized chair by Kae herself to match the designs of her collection.

Kae Hana also offers beautiful brooches and neck pieces that look amazing paired with a collared top.

Every piece is hand-made by Kae herself:

Kae spray paints her design template onto PVC (right), before cutting it (left).
Each piece is carefully hand-cut and therefore no 2 pieces are identical.
PVC is used for the top and bottom layers. Printed cotton fabric is sandwiched in between.
