My Week in Instagram Photos

life has been on fast forward mode.

Much needed coffee break.
sitting at a cute coffee shop on hollywood road right now waiting for our 4pm meeting. taking a moment to reflect on our startup journey. it's been a great learning experience. it's stressful working 25 hours a day, running on empty & 5 hours of sleep, constantly worrying about how things are going to turn out... but it's also fulfilling when you try to do all you can to realize your dream. starting your own company has its perks but it's not for everyone. if you are considering venturing out on your own, think very carefully why you want to do it. if you're bored with life, sick of your job, out of a job, don't see starting your own company as an "easy solution". it is anything but easy. it's challenging and frustrating. if you don't have great support from friends and family, it makes it that much harder. finding the right business partner isn't easy either. starting a company is like entering a marriage. they say you should never pick a good friend to be your roommate or business partner. guess i broke the first rule. but vicky and i make a compatible duo not just because we come from different industries, backgrounds and have different skill sets, we also have different social circles, which overlaps slightly if at all. i think the latter makes a huge difference as it gives us time to recharge away from each other, a very important point. you do need to take time, even if it's 15 mins, to just zone on and rest.

No sleep 沒睡覺

The ZAOgirls have some important deadlines coming up this week so will update about their adventures soon after. Check back for new posts later this week!

不好意思, 我們這個星期要趕一些deadline所以比較忙。 再幾天回來吧!

ZAOZAO Photoshoot

some of you may remember the series of horrible photos we had on our about us section. we decided it was time to bid farewell to those amateur photos and have professional head shots taken last week.

Getting my hair permed, which turned out to be a bad idea because it made me look like I aged 20 years.

What's Jeremy Lin got to do with ZAOZAO?

while both taiwanese-americans at harvard and only one class apart, i unfortunately cannot purport to be BFFs with jlin. but that doesn't mean LINSANITY isn't just as inspiring to me as it is to young Asian boys like our team techie, who proudly displays his jersey below.

Tea with an Angel

i met our angel investor for the first time last night.

Was our angel investor going to greet me with an icy cold look?

i didn't know what to expect. aside from friends of my parents, i've had little to no interaction with bankers, let alone an investor. i didn't want him to think i was an idiot (let's be honest here, vicky's the "smart one" and i'm the "fashionable one"), especially since i resembled a drag queen having just come from our photo shoot. i tried to reassure myself that i didn't look out of place in a 5 star hotel, even though i had 4 fake lashes on and enough foundation of my face to build a 80-storey building (no, really). i prayed our angel wouldn't ask questions i could only reply with a blank stare.

Riding in cars with strangers

courtesy WHOSTHAT

yesterday started off pretty ordinarily: emails, tweets, sprinting down queen's road to grab lunch while wearing hello kitty boxer shorts, praying that nobody i knew would recognize me on the street. all went as planned, until a designer i was supposed to meet on friday sms'd. "in the area, can u meet me in twenty?" yes, if it saves me an hour plus commute to fotan, obvi! i threw on real clothes, popped in my earbuds (azealia banks - 212 / dj - madeon remix on repeat, soo addictive) and dashed out to central. within five minutes of explaining the ZAOZAO concept to her, her face lit up and the next thing i knew, we were filling her gas tank up before lion rock tunnel, zooming towards mainland china.

Why do people think artists are special? It's just another job.

the subject obviously belies the truth of how i feel about artists, and is just another reason to love andy warhol in all of his sardonic glory.

Roland Mouret A/W 2012

Roland Mouret's Autumn Winter 2012 Collection about to debut
Last fashion show for the season
Went to the Roland Mouret's closing show tonight, which marked the end of Singapore's Audi Fashion Festival. I was elated that I was invited! I half expected to be seated at the back of the tent but my plus one and I had excellent seats and for the first time I was able to view a collection properly!

Spotted at Blueprint: Argyle and Oxford

Argyle and Oxford's perforated top
Argyle and Oxford's booth was another that made me slow down as I was rushing to check out 150+ booths today. Their perforated laser cut tops, dresses and bottoms were eye-catching and unique, a technique I presume requires careful workmanship and extra attention to detail.

Spotted at Blueprint: Maine St. Footwear

Maine St. Footwear Men's Shoes

I have to be honest. I hardly pay attention to men's fashion. It caught me by surprise when I did a double take as I walked past Maine St. Footwear's booth today. There was a decent range of stylish and practical men's shoes in the standard blacks and browns. Definitely catered towards the more suave and sophisticated male customer. I could imagine these shoes appearing on Mr Porter or GQ. The price range is affordable so purchasing a pair or two won't set you back!

I should have taken more photos and I will when I go back to Blueprint tomorrow to make another round. Check back soon for more photos!

Spotted at Blueprint: 72 Smalldive

Colorful assortment of ostrich, calf leather & crocodile convertible wallets.

72 Smalldive's booth was one of the few that really caught my eye today at Blueprint Emporium, not because of the prime location of their booth, but for the extensive range of leather goods they offered (which were of excellent quality). The bags and wallets were beautifully made and came in a range of styles, sizes, colors and prices. I loved the rainbow colors of the convertible wallets. Pure genius. A wallet and a handbag for the price of one! They reminded me of the Celine trio bags & python wallets.

Decorating the Streets

Can you tell I had a busy day hitting the streets of Singapore with our ZAO stickers?

Mugler A/W 2012

Mugler A/W 2012 finale.
Went to the opening show of Audi Fashion Festival 2012 last night. My first fashion show in Singapore! Despite the long wait before the show, it was exciting to watch the alien-like models strut down the runway.

Audi Star Creations 2012

The lovely Rana over at BonjourSingapore invited me to attend Audi Star Creation with her earlier today. Audi Star Creation is a fashion design competition organized by TaFf (Textile & Fashion Federation) aimed at promoting asian emerging designers.

There were 255 applicants this year from 13 different countries. The 12 finalists from China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea & Thailand each showcased 4 looks today.

3 winners were announced at the end of the show (read on to find out who!). Each designer won SGD 10,000 from Audi Singapore, a 1-year internship with leading fashion retailer FJ Benjamin and an opportunity to launch a capsule collection at next year's Star Creation.

Seoul Searching

one of the most beautiful things about having your own company is the ability to set your own hours. i cannot stress how TOTALLY underrated this is, if not just for the sheer luxury of wearing pore cleansing clay masks while working!!

but seriously...

Part of Me

the real reason i've been working from singapore is because someone very dear to me was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness days after i had committed to working on zaozao. it wasn't a matter of which responsibility i had to walk away from first, but figuring out a feasible working situation asap. and so i hopped on the first flight out of hong kong and dove head first into chaos.
