"...unique and beautiful in its own way"
Joy Ng's story is a surprising and interesting departure from the norm. Working as an air stewardess prior to launching QUAINTHOOD with business partner Subhas Avadiar, Joy's frequent trips abroad served as a channel of creative inspiration for her.
A modern take on classic wardrobe staples, Joy designs sophisticated and effortlessly cool clothes. Paired with a statement necklace or a bright lip, QUAINTHOOD offers timeless pieces that are perfect for updating your wardrobe.
Read on to learn more about the meaning of "QUAINTHOOD" and who Joy would love to dress!
Hi Joy, can you tell us a little about
yourself?
I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic, Design
School with a Diploma in Apparel Design and Merchandising. I'm quiet and
observant. I like fashion and music.
How did you get into design?
I got influenced by my mom. I grew up watching
her make one of a kind dresses for my sister and I for occasions such as
birthdays and chinese new year, and I loved being her assistant.
Why the name "QUAINTHOOD"?
"Quaint" meaning attractively
unusual, and out of the ordinary, and "hood" being represented just
like in childhood or adulthood. Quainthood basically describes a phase of one's
life, one of which does not fit the cookie cutter perfect ideals, unique and
beautiful in it's own way.
Describe your brand's aesthetic.
It's modern, thoughtful and perennial, with
pieces that are intelligent and effortless yet with a touch of street edge.
Who is the QUAINTHOOD customer in 3 words?
Street-smart, modern, sophisticated.
Tell us about your favorite piece.
My favourite is an oversized classic white
boyfriend cut shirt, with irregular sized pockets infront, and a U shaped back
cut-out from the nape to mid back. I love that it is simple, and bold with it's
subtle details.
What inspires you?
Music, art and people.
What type of creative challenges have you
faced?
Starring at a blank page for too long and not
feeling inspired. It's the worst. And sometimes it is also quite challenging
when you have to think of both the design and the business aspect of things and
incorporate it in a design product that you like and yet it has to have appeal
to the market and convert back into sales.
Who would you love to dress - dead or alive -
and why?
I'd
love to dress Lykke Li. I love her music and style, and she is the perfect
embodiment of what I'd like to call QUAINTHOOD - attractively unusual, one of a
kind, and out of the ordinary.
