Fru:yo Factory Froyo Fans

when ling and i brainstormed food sponsors for our launch party a few weeks ago, the first thought the came to mind was naturally frozen yogurt. in the few waking moments we don't spend together, ling is always off buying froyo or eating froyo or throwing out the remains (but usually not much) of her mochi froyo. i myself prefer warm, non-lactose containing things (mom says it's good for the uterus heh) but enjoy the occasional fermented milk product from time to time.

Floriana Bucket Bag

Handbags have always been our weakness. We could hardly contain our excitement when we first discovered Artessorio’s Floriana range! Their messenger bag, bucket bag and clutch bag (see right) are all decorated with intricate, perforated patterns and made with high quality cowhide leather.

When we caught up with Vincci Law, Artessorio’s Director, over coffee, she emphasized the importance of creating timeless and classic handbags. We couldn’t agree more! After all, who needs another ‘It’ bag in their closet?

Read on to find out where the name Artessorio was derived from, the best ways to take care of your leather goods and what obstacles Artessorio faced when the label was just starting out.

What's the story behind Artessorio?
Artessorio is not only a handbag brand but also a story of friendship and two experts working together in harmony. One is a leather accessory production expert with a detailed understanding of tailoring techniques and materials; the other is a designer/art director educated in Italy, with years of design experience in Europe. The story started in 2009 while they were conceiving the brand of Artessorio. Today they make that dream a reality.

What does "Artessorio" mean?
Artessorio is formed by two Italian words: Arte & Accessorio, which mean Art & Accessory in English.  Artessorio celebrates the sensuality and elegance of modern and unconventional women with a flair for art and design.

How would you describe your brand?
Artessorio exudes charm, authenticity and elegance by poetic creations. Using pattern art, Artessorio create accessories which are distinctively different, for women who are always questing for originality. Coupled with top quality leather and sophisticated craftsmanship, the brand offers accessories and handbags with a unique sense of style and quality.

What types of leather do you use and why do you work with them?
We want our handbags to be carried as well as to be cherished over time. Quality and durability of materials are very important to use. Cow-hide nappa leather is definitely a very good option in our design because of its durable but also soft texture. More than that, we love the unique finishing of laser-cut perforation on nappa leather that can very well represent our chic and elegant design.

What are some leather care tips you can share with our shoppers?

Most important way to care your leather bag is to use it. It may sound tricky but the reason we say it because leather is a material that could breathe your touch. We love leather because of its very unique quality that its color and texture could age over time. The more you use it, the more unique it becomes. Though, it is good to also take care of it when using it. Try to keep it in a cool dry place and definitely not to keep it in a sealed plastic bag. Excess humidity can induce the growth of molds and this can really damage your bag. You may put some wax to keep the leather texture more shiny as well.

What were some of the early obstacles your label faced?
Creating design is one thing but selling a product is another topic. There are lots of logistics we have to take into account. Establishing a sales network and finding the right places to sell is not easy. We also often need to struggle to make decisions. We believe in what we do but there are certainly moments when we also hesitate. But we imagine these challenges are typical for all kinds of entrepreneurship.

Do you have any advice to share with other emerging designers?
We would say it is important to be prepared ten times more than you think you have prepared. There are all kinds of challenges and maybe even troubles that you have never thought of. But dont get frustrated and it may be good to be also rational to test out the ideas you have. If it doesnt work within the timeframe, then try to understand the reason and immediately move on. Try as much as possible to talk to other designers. It's always inspiring to know how other brands or designers find their paths. In our experience, we learned so much from many fantastic people in our design and fashion marketing circles.

What's next for your brand?
We are having our new collection in the coming months. Perforated pattern design is still our favorite element to play with. The new collection takes inspiration from ornamental art and we re-interpret it in a contemporary style. We also continue our crossover line with Wahahafactory, which the line has more structural and playful design elements. We are very happy to keep these two lines running at the same time. This really allow us to bring out all the essence in designing for the multi-faceted quality of women.

What It's Like Preparing for Launch

Our Designers: Bubble Mood

BUBBLE MOOD

"Girls need to feel good in our clothes!"

Bubble Mood's printed kimono.

 Bubble Mood's kimono.

 Bubble Mood's teal kimono.
Bubble Mood’s kimonos are perfect for days you want to throw on something comfortable and flattering. Their stylish trademark kimonos are available in a range of colors and prints.

Seeing the opportunity to “create something that doesn’t really exist [in Asia],” founders Olivia and Margaux decided to launch Bubble Mood, a trendy, affordable brand that “is a mix of Asian and European inspirations”.

“You either have the famous luxury brands, or the small shop with no real brand…there are not so many intermediate options as "createurs” explaned the duo, and we couldn’t agree more!

Read on to find out why the founders chose kimonos to be their staples, what Bubble Mood means and what’s next for their brand.

Hi guys, tell us about yourselves.
Margaux: I grew up in the fashion industry, my mom used to be a designer for children’s clothes in France, so I've always been surrounded by fabrics, ribbons, drawing… I knew quite early what i wanted. So I studied fashion design right after college.
Olivia: I come from Paris where I’ve grown up in a creative environment since my father is a photographer and my mother a journalist. I’ve studied different creative fields and started to be really interested in the fashion industry when I worked as a stylist for different magazines in Paris. Then, I moved to Shanghai where I created, Warehouse Studio, a creative agency with my husband and few years after, Bubble Mood.

What was your inspiration in starting your own label?
We started to realise there we have so many clothes shops in China, but it’s hard to find a brand with nice clothes and real strong image. You either have the famous luxury brands, or the small shop with no real brand, but there were not so many intermediate options as "createurs".
Moreover we also realised the Chinese young girls are more and more into fashion, and they are very open to new ideas about fashion, it means new shapes, new inspirations, new codes, etc… We saw the opportunity to create something that doesn’t really exist here at the moment: a brand which is a mix of Asian and European inspirations, with nice and trendy pieces, but still affordable. We thought it would be a great challenge.

How did the name "Bubble Mood" come about?
Bubble evoked the idea of something effervescent, fresh and always in movement, that’s our idea of fashion. Mood refers to the girls and women moods that changed quite fast and that’s why we also wanted to create a brand that can satisfy these different moods thanks to different clothes with different syles while keeping a directive line.
How would you describe the "Bubble Mood" customer?
The Bubble Mood girl is someone who likes fashion but who doesn’t want to look like all the trendy girls. She can express who she is thanks to our clothes while being chic and elegant. She is urban and lives in big cities like Shanghai or HK and is quite exigent.
Why kimonos?
We liked the idea of taking an Asian classic piece, a shape that exists for decades, and completely change the aspect and way to wear it. Moreover the kimono is really a style that highlights the women silhouettes by revealing their best aspects.
Tell us about the design process of your kimono dresses?
First we wanted to keep the original shape, but adapt it in a more casual chic way, so we changed the shape of sleeves to make them more open and comfortable. We decided to make it shorter.  And then of course we choose some modern fabrics, so silk with neon colours and original prints.
Then for the winter season we thought of another way to wear it, so as a jacket. That’s why we have shorten it again. And we wanted to mix it with other fabrics and other colors and the idea of adding leather sounded interesting to us.
How do you describe your personal style, and do your designs reflect this?
Our personal style is quite urban chic, but more importantly we always wear some comfortable clothes, and that’s what we try to always keep this in our design. We like to be chic, modern, feminine, sexy and to feel comfortable.
Girls need to feel good in our clothes!
When you were setting up your brand, what challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
As we wanted to mix different influences and target both Asian and European girls, it was hard to find shapes, design, colors etc… that could fit both, the standards are totally different from one culture to another, but it was a great challenge and it made us think outside the box.
Another difficulty was also the limited investment; we had to deal with many things that were not our speciality in order to save some cost and to be more reactive as we can, to be in our perpetual movement of creation. Again this made us learn and grow quite quickly.
What’s next?
The new winter collection is coming out this week, so many new items except from the Kimonos, you can check our new website www.bubble-mood.comAnd some pop up accessories are coming next month, along with other limited editions items!

Our Designers: Mandy Wu

MANDY WU

Mandy's favorite piece, the Secrets necklace (in 14K gold above,
also available in rhodium).

A chemistry grad turned jewelry designer is not a typical transition you hear about when interviewing designers. Yet nothing could be more natural of a progression than this.

Born in the U.S. and raised in Singapore, Mandy launched her jewelry label after realizing her true passion lay in design.

Despite having no former training in fashion or design, Mandy’s bold and edgy designs stand out. “Drawing inspiration from tarot and ritualistic body modifications”, Mandy’s collection was “heavily influenced by the notion of self-empowerment and the questioning of one’s freedom to speak, act and love”.

Read on to find out more about Mandy's design process.

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Mandy. I'm the founder and designer of the jewelry label, MANDY WU.

How did you transition from chemistry to jewelry design?
I was seeking a creative outlet. Jewelry design was a natural choice, because I've always perceived jewelry as a very personal and intimate way ofexpressing oneself.

What was the inspiration behind starting your own label?
Having my own label in a way allows me to exert my point of view.

What types of materials do you use and why do you choose to work with them?
The materials I use range from various metals to fabrics to nylon chains. I usually decide on a material because it allows me to realize my vision for the collection. When there are more than one material for that, I would go for the one that allows me to play with it in an unexpected way.

What is your design process like?
Most times even before I start a collection, I already have a rough idea what I want it to be about. From there I would turn to my references, do some research, and then translate them into my designs.

Tell us about your favorite piece.
Right now it's the Secrets necklace. The sewn lips is my take on the freedom of speech,or the lack of it.

How would you describe your customer?
She is astrong and confident woman who's not afraid to embrace her femininity. She knows what she wants, and appreciates the eclectic & original.

What is the most challenging thing you have faced so far?
Striking a balance between the creative and business aspects of running a label.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of starting a jewelry label without having af ashion or design background?
Because I didn't come from a fashion/design background, I work on every design without any preconceptions. In a way, it also motivates me to draw inspiration from unexpected places. Having said that, I have to learn everything about managing a label as I go along and often that means learning from mistakes the hard way.

Stop by our launch party at KAPOK next Wednesday (Sept 26th) to try on and purchase Mandy Wu's edgy jewelry!

Read on to find out about Evelyn's favorite piece, the Sojurn necklace, and what's next for her brand!

Hi Evelyn, tell us a little more about yourself.
I am fashion designer with energy, life and vitality trying to live her dream through designing. I have a monstrous love and passion for fashion, art, designing and dreams. A fresh graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and started my own label with my partner, Pearly, since April 2012

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
Versatile, edgy and relaxed

Do your designs reflect your personal style?
For most of the designs, we go for fabrication that is soft and light in order to obtain a gentle look that flaunts a women’s femininity while throwing in an unexpected hard edge by including unique construction in the details. Based on loose, relaxed silhouettes, our designs offers enhanced mobility for active women on the go while maintaining comfort throughout the day. Key components of the designs are pragmatic, versatile and creative.

What types of materials do you use for your jewelry and why?
We use different kinds of yarns and stainless steel for our accessories. We use soft and light yarns on the ropes to obtain a gentle look while throwing in an unexpected edginess by including hardwares such as nuts and bolts.

Can you share the design process of your jewelry with us.
First we choose the colors that is suitable to our theme, next we start to explore and experiment with different of materials and knots. Even the numbers of hardware we use is important as we do not wish to design anything that is too heavy for customers.

Tell us about your favorite piece.
I'd say its the piece called 'Sojourn'. It has a story behind it. It started with my 2 friends from NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts). we came together and designed this piece together for our graduation collection called 'Sojourn'. This piece is specially named after our graduation collection and is dedicated to our friendship.

What sort of creative challenges have you faced?
I think what is challenging is when you have to balance between creativity and business ambition. We have to constantly design products that suit the market, trend and our customers. I get demoralized sometimes when you get mind blocked, stressed or when I didn't meet my expectation. But I have learnt to stay focus, motivated and most importantly believe in yourself and never give up.
